Yeong Shiong Chiew is an Associate Professor in the Malaysia School of Engineering at Monash University. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Canterbury in 2013, with the thesis "Model-based mechanical ventilation for the critically ill." He also holds a Master of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia in 2010 and a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical-Automotive from the same university in 2007.
His academic interests lie in biomedical engineering, encompassing physiological modelling, translational medical research, clinical and experimental protocol design and developments, and biostatistics. Additional focuses include mechanical system design and control for product development and virtual reality technology for graphic user interfaces and end-user experience studies. Chiew develops physiological models, algorithms, and system identification methods to create clinical decision metrics, conducting clinical and animal trials, especially in mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients. His career includes a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre for Bioengineering, University of Canterbury, and an ongoing Adjunct Senior Fellow appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering there from 2024 to 2027. Notable publications include "Experimental Validation of the ACTIV Multi-Patient Mechanical Ventilation System" (2026), "Convolutional long short-term memory neural network integrated with classifier in classifying type of asynchrony breathing in mechanically ventilated patients" (2025), "Methods for estimating resting energy expenditure in intensive care patients" (2025), and "Stochastic virtual patient-guided mechanical ventilation treatment" (2025). Awards received are the 2025 Dean's Award in Education (Innovation in Learning and Teaching), 2023 RINENG Young Investigator Award, 2020 MUPA Supervisor of the Year Award, 2019 PVC Awards for Excellence in Education (Team), and ITEX 2021 Gold Medal. He is Associate Editor for Computer Methods and Programs in Biomedicine (2025-2027) and Vice-Chair for Education and Technical Committee, TC 8.2 Biological and Medical Systems, International Federation of Automatic Control (2023-2026).
