Shelley Lawson serves as a Lecturer in the Curtin Dubai Foundation Program at Curtin University Dubai, affiliated with the School of Business and Humanities. With over twenty years of experience as an English Language teacher in higher education institutions located in Germany, South Korea, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, she has built a robust career in language education and media studies. Lawson holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, a Master’s Degree in Media and Culture, and a Master’s Degree in English Language and Applied Linguistics. Currently, she is pursuing a PhD, focusing her doctoral research on the credibility of personal stories shared on Twitter.
Her academic interests center on second language acquisition, culture, social media, and critical discourse analysis. Lawson actively engages in scholarly activities, regularly presenting at international conferences and publishing her research. Notably, she delivered a paper titled "The Story Types of the #MeToo Movement and Their Relation to Credibility" at the Narrative 2024 Conference held at Newcastle University. In her teaching portfolio at Curtin University Dubai, she instructs courses including design thinking, engaging media, digital culture, and Writing on the Web (NETS2001). Beyond the classroom, she moderates speaker series events, such as discussions with prominent authors, and leads workshops like the Design Bootcamp, where she introduces foundational concepts in design thinking, including ideation, empathy, and prototyping. Despite her research accomplishments, Lawson emphasizes that teaching remains the most fulfilling element of her professional endeavors, reflecting her dedication to student development and academic mentorship within the global Curtin community.
