Professor Shaoen Wu is the Chair of the Department of Information Technology, Professor of Information Technology, and Interim Director of the Center for Applied Computing at Kennesaw State University. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Auburn University, an MS in Control Theory and Engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, and a BS in Automation from Qingdao University of Science and Technology. His distinguished career includes previous roles as State Farm Endowed Chair and Full Professor in the School of Information Technology at Illinois State University. From 2013 to 2020, he served at Ball State University as Assistant Department Chair of Computer Science, member of the Dean's Faculty Advisory Board, and member of the Advisory Council of Scholarship for the Vice Provost for Research. Earlier appointments encompass Assistant Professor in the School of Computing at the University of Southern Mississippi, Staff Scientist at ADTRAN, and Member of Technical Staff at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies.
Shaoen Wu's research interests focus on cybersecurity, Internet of Things, wireless sensing and networking, and smart health. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers in prominent outlets such as IEEE Internet of Things Journal and conferences including IEEE GLOBECOM, ICC, and ICCCN. His research has received support from NSF, NASA, Cisco, NVIDIA, Intel, Dell, ARM, Cypress Inc., and Microsoft. Wu has earned three Best Paper Awards, including one from IEEE GLOBECOM 2019, a Faculty Excellence Award, and First Place in a Graduate Student Forum. In 2025, he co-led securing two NSF grants extending through May 2027 to establish a national community of AI educators, promoting collaboration, shared teaching materials, and guidelines to broaden AI education access, especially for under-resourced institutions. A Senior Member of IEEE, former Secretary of IEEE MMTC from 2018 to 2020, and ACM member, he has chaired and co-chaired international conferences and served as an editor for journals.
