About Shanta

Shanta Zimmer, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz Medical Campus. She serves as Executive Vice Dean for Education, overseeing the education mission of the school. Zimmer earned her BA from The Catholic University of America in 1993 and her MD from Emory University School of Medicine in 1997. She completed her internship in 1998, residency in internal medicine as chief resident in 2001, and fellowship in infectious diseases in 2004, all at Emory University School of Medicine. Board-certified in internal medicine (2000, 2010) and infectious diseases (2003, 2013), she is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine. Her career includes leadership roles such as Senior Associate Dean for Education and Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion prior to her current position.

Zimmer's research focuses on infectious disease epidemiology, particularly household transmission dynamics of seasonal human coronaviruses, influenza, and SARS-CoV-2, as well as medical education innovations. Key publications include 'Household Transmission Dynamics of Seasonal Human Coronaviruses' (J Infect Dis, 2023), 'Mycobacterium abscessus Meningitis Associated with Stem Cell Treatment During Medical Tourism' (Emerg Infect Dis, 2023), 'Inquiry for the win: Fostering curiosity through a BINGO exercise in a longitudinally integrated clerkship' (Med Teach, 2024), 'Factors Associated with Retention and Adherence in a Comprehensive, Diverse HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis Clinic' (AIDS Res Hum Retroviruses, 2022), and 'Age-specific social mixing of school-aged children in a US setting using proximity detecting sensors and contact surveys' (Sci Rep, 2021). Additional works cover COVID-19 risk factors, asthma in hospitalizations, structural vulnerability, and residency training enhancements like holistic review and scholarship programs. She practices at UCHealth Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion, contributing to patient care in infectious diseases and internal medicine.
