Sergio Figueiredo is a Professor of English in the Department of English at Kennesaw State University, where he has been teaching since August 2012. He advanced from Assistant Professor of Media and Rhetoric (2012-2018) to Associate Professor (2018-2023), and was promoted to full Professor in July 2023. Currently, he serves as Interim First-Year Composition Director (since July 2025) and previously as Associate Chair of the English Department (2022-2025). He also holds appointments as Graduate Faculty in Professional Writing and Affiliate Faculty in American Studies. Prior to KSU, Figueiredo was Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Miami University (2011-2012) and held positions at Clemson University. His academic background includes a PhD in Rhetoric, Communication, and Information Design from Clemson University (2011), an MA in English from Marshall University (2007), and a BA in English from Rowan University (2005). Born and raised in southern New Jersey to immigrants from rural Portugal, Figueiredo completed graduate summer study abroad at the European Graduate School in 2009.
Figueiredo's research explores the early-nineteenth-century literary, artistic, and rhetorical avant-garde, histories of rhetoric, comics, graphic storytelling, and digital media rhetorics. Notable publications include his translation Inventing Comics: A New Translation of Rodolphe Töpffer’s Reflections on Graphic Storytelling, Media Rhetorics, and Aesthetic Practice (Parlor Press, 2017); co-edited volume Immigrant Scholars in Rhetoric, Composition, and Communication: Memoirs of a First Generation (NCTE, 2019); “Rodolphe Töpffer and the Histories of Rhetoric” in Lost and Found Texts in Rhetoric and Composition (MLA, 2023); “Rhetoric in the Metaverse” in Convergence: The International Journal of Research into New Media Technologies (2022); and “Dromopoeia: Teaching Ēthopoeia, Phronēsis, and Social Responsibility with Avatar” in The Ethics of Playing, Researching, and Teaching Games in the Writing Classroom (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021). He has published peer-reviewed essays in journals such as ImageTexT, Textshop Experiments, Rhizomes, and Journal of Visual Literacy. Figueiredo serves in editorial roles, including Assistant Editor (Production) for Intermezzo, Contributing Editor for Esthesis, Review Board Member for Present Tense, and Editorial Board Member for The Comics Grid and TheJUMP+. His affiliations include the Rhetoric Society of America, National Council of Teachers of English, and International Society for the History of Rhetoric.
