About Sean

Professor Sean Maynard is a Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne, where he also serves as Associate Dean (Academic). He earned his PhD in Information Security Management from the University of Melbourne in 2010, a Master of Computing from Monash University in 1998, and a Bachelor of Computing (Honours) from Monash University in 1992. Maynard's academic interests centre on information security management from a human perspective, with specializations in cybersecurity governance, organisational incident response, security policy quality, culture, and strategic decision-making in evolving threat landscapes. His research addresses enterprise security strategy, risk assessment, intellectual property and trade secret leakage, information warfare, and board-level cybersecurity reporting and director accountability. He leads collaborative projects, including ARC Discovery grants on organisational learning from incident response, and supervises a team of over ten PhD students with diverse backgrounds in information systems, business administration, military science, and security intelligence.

In his career at the University of Melbourne, Maynard has shaped cybersecurity education as Course Director for the Master of Information Systems and theme leader in business analytics and cybersecurity management within the Academic Centre of Cyber Security Excellence. As Director of Melbourne Security Associates, he delivers PhD-level consulting to boards and executives in Australia and Malaysia on cybersecurity governance frameworks and risk management.
