Scott Hsu is an Associate Professor of Finance in the Department of Finance at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. Born in Taipei, Taiwan, he developed an early interest in finance inspired by films like Wall Street. He holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2007), an M.A. in Economics from the University of Southern California (2002), and a B.B.A. in Finance from National Taiwan University (1998). Before joining the University of Arkansas in 2015 as an Assistant Professor, Hsu was an Assistant Professor of Finance at the Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (2007-2015), and served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Finance at Purdue University's Krannert School of Management (2012-2013). He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2021.
Hsu's research focuses on private equity, venture capital, labor and finance, initial public offerings, behavioral corporate finance, and corporate innovations. His publications appear in top-tier journals, including "Politically Connected Private Equity and Employment" (Journal of Finance, 2017, with Mara Faccio), which examines how political connections influence employment in private equity-backed firms; "The New Game in Town: Competitive Effects of IPOs" (Journal of Finance, 2010, with Adam V. Reed and Jörg Rocholl); "Do Managers Matter for Corporate Innovations?" (Journal of Corporate Finance, 2016, with Chanho Cho, Joseph T. Halford, and Lilian Ng); and "Technology Timing of IPOs and Venture Capital Incubation" (Journal of Corporate Finance, 2013). Forthcoming work includes "Personal Bankruptcy Laws and Corporate Policy" (Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, 2019, with Yiwen Chen, Joseph T. Halford, and Chu-Bin Lin). He earned Runner-up for the 2017 Coller Institute of Venture Research Award for "Investment Allocation across Multiple Funds: Conflict and Performance in Venture Capital" (with Vikram Nanda and Qinghai Wang). His paper "Beauty is Wealth: CEO Appearance and Shareholder Value" (with Joseph T. Halford) garnered coverage in The New York Times, Forbes, CNBC, The Huffington Post, and Bloomberg Business. Hsu has served as an ad hoc referee for journals such as Quarterly Journal of Economics and Journal of Corporate Finance. He teaches undergraduate courses including Corporate Finance and International Finance.
