Sauman Chu is a Professor in Architecture and Design at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, serving as Professor of Graphic Design and Morse-Alumni Distinguished Professor in the College of Design. She currently holds positions as Associate Dean for the Undergraduate Curriculum and Assessment and Special Assistant to the Vice Provost and Dean for Undergraduate Education at the Office of Undergraduate Education. From 2019 to 2022, she was Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Faculty Affairs in the College of Design, and she directed the Graphic Design program's undergraduate studies from 2013 to 2019. As director of the Graphic Design program, Chu has taught courses including Web Design, Graphic Design I: Text and Image, Graphic Design II: Identity and Symbols, Animation, and Fundamentals of Game Design. Holding a Ph.D., she has been at the University of Minnesota since 1993.

Chu's academic interests center on human-centered design, design and health, multilingual design, user experience design, and visual communication, with a focus on interactive technology applications for diverse users. Her interdisciplinary research has produced publications in design and medical fields, such as "Deconstructing Silos of Knowledge Around Lung Transplantation to Support Patients: A Patient-Specific Search of Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients Data" (2022, Transplantation), "Design of a patient-centered decision support tool when selecting an organ transplant center" (2021, PLOS ONE), "Journey To Transplant: Developing a social support network counseling intervention to improve kidney transplantation" (2021, Health Expectations), and "Designing a patient-specific search of transplant program performance and outcomes: Feedback from heart transplant candidates and recipients" (2021, Clinical Transplantation). With 68 research outputs, her work emphasizes patient-centered tools for transplant decisions. Chu received the 2019 Horace T. Morse-University of Minnesota Alumni Association Award for Outstanding Contributions to Undergraduate Education, along with the 2013 College of Design Outstanding Teaching Award and the 2006 E-Teaching Excellence Award. She has led service-learning initiatives where students completed over 70 projects for more than 50 organizations. Chu has served on committees like the University Campus Curriculum Review Committee (2014-2017), University Senate Judicial Committee (2006-2012), and chaired several departmental committees.
