About Sarah

Dr. Sarah Carter is a Lecturer and unit coordinator in the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Program within the School of Health and Clinical Sciences at The University of Western Australia, focusing on Podiatric Medicine and Surgery. As part of the inaugural cohort, she completed her Bachelor of Podiatric Medicine at UWA in 2010. She advanced her studies with a Master of Science in Motion Analysis from the University of Dundee in 2014, where her thesis examined kinetic and kinematic data in lower limbs during highland dancing. In 2018, she earned a PhD in Dance Biomechanics through a joint program between UWA’s Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Division and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts at Edith Cowan University. Her doctoral research, titled ‘Lower leg and foot contributions to turnout in pre-professional female dancers: A clinical and kinematic analysis,’ highlights her expertise in dancer biomechanics.

Since 2014, Dr. Carter has contributed to teaching and curriculum development in the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine Program, coordinating clinical practice units such as PODI4202 and PODI4205. Her research interests center on biomechanics and podiatric medicine, with a particular emphasis on lower leg and foot contributions to turnout in dancers using 3D multi-segment foot models. Notable publications include ‘An analysis of the foot in turnout using a dance specific 3D multi-segment foot model’ (Journal of Foot and Ankle Research, 2019, with Bryant and Hopper), ‘Lower leg and foot contributions to turnout in female pre-professional dancers: A 3D kinematic analysis’ (Journal of Sports Sciences, 2018, with Duncan, Weidemann, and Hopper), ‘Kinematic repeatability of a multi-segment foot model for dance’ (Sports Biomechanics, 2018, with Sato and Hopper), ‘Dancers’ joint strategies for achieving turnout in low and high friction conditions’ (Medical Problems of Performing Artists, 2020, with Duncan et al.), and ‘Is TCC-EZ a Suitable Alternative to Gold Standard Total-Contact Casting? A Plantar Pressure Analysis’ (Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association, 2021, with Bhatt et al.). She has presented at key conferences, including the Australasian Podiatry Conference (2017, 2019) and International Association for Dance Medicine and Science meetings in Hong Kong (2016), Houston (2017), and Helsinki (2018). Additionally, she completed a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching in 2025.
