About Santosh

Santosh Kapuria is the R. C. Malhotra Chair Professor, J. C. Bose National Fellow, and Head of the Department of Applied Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. He specializes in solid mechanics within the engineering discipline. Kapuria obtained his B.C.E. in Civil Engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata in 1989, M.E. in Structural Engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1991, and Ph.D. in Applied Mechanics from IIT Delhi in 1997. He received the Prof. Govinda Rao Medal for the best M.E. student at IISc. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of the CSIR-Structural Engineering Research Centre from April 2019 to November 2021.

His research interests encompass smart composite and sandwich structures, functionally graded material structures, damage detection and structural health monitoring, active and semi-active control of structures, finite element analysis, and computational structural mechanics. Kapuria has authored numerous publications in prestigious journals including the International Journal of Solids and Structures, Composite Structures, Journal of Sound and Vibration, and Acta Mechanica. Notable works include 'An efficient coupled theory for multilayered beams with embedded piezoelectric sensory and active layers' (International Journal of Solids and Structures, 2001), 'Bending and Free Vibration Response of Layered Functionally Graded Beams: A Theoretical Model and its Experimental Validation' (Composite Structures, 2008), 'Three-dimensional piezoelasticity solution for dynamics of cross-ply cylindrical shells integrated with piezoelectric fiber reinforced composite actuators and sensors' (Composite Structures, 2010), and 'A quadrilateral shallow shell element based on the third-order theory for functionally graded plates and shells' (European Journal of Mechanics - A/Solids, 2015). He co-edited the proceedings of the ACMFMS 2012 conference on Mechanics of Functional Materials and Structures. His scholarly impact is evidenced by an h-index of 37 and over 4,800 citations on Google Scholar. Kapuria holds fellowships from the Indian Academy of Sciences (2017), Indian National Science Academy (2015), National Academy of Sciences India (2015), and Indian National Academy of Engineering (2010). He joined Acta Mechanica as an editor in 2024 and chairs the 15th International Congress on Thermal Stresses at IIT Delhi.
