About Saman

Saman Halgamuge is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, School of Electrical, Mechanical and Infrastructure Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at the University of Melbourne. A Fellow of IEEE, IET, AAIA, and NASSL, he earned his B.Sc. Engineering degree in Electronics and Telecommunication from the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, and his Dipl.-Ing. and Ph.D. degrees in data engineering from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. His academic interests encompass artificial intelligence, machine learning, optimization, pattern recognition, neural networks, computer vision, image processing, feature extraction, supervised learning, and classification. He leads research in AI applications across various engineering domains, including robotics, renewable energy systems, and biomedical data analysis.

Throughout his career, Professor Halgamuge previously served as Professor and Head of the Research School of Engineering at the Australian National University. At the University of Melbourne, he was Associate Dean (2013-2015) and contributes to international engagements. He is listed among the top 2% most cited researchers worldwide for AI and image processing in the Stanford University database. He has supervised 50 PhD students and 16 postdocs to completion in Australia and delivered numerous keynote lectures internationally. Notable honors include Distinguished Visitor of the IEEE Computer Society (2024-2026), Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (2018-2021), and service on the IEEE Fellow selection panel (2024-2025). Key publications include 'Self-organizing hierarchical particle swarm optimizer with time-varying acceleration coefficients,' 'ViQuaS: An improved reconstruction pipeline for viral quasispecies spectra generated by next-generation sequencing' (2014), 'Generalized Modeling of Multilink Cable-Driven Manipulators With Arbitrary Routing Using the Cable-Routing Matrix' (2013), and 'Combining news and technical indicators in daily stock price trends prediction.' He holds visiting professor positions at SLIIT, University of Peradeniya, National Institute of Fundamental Studies, and University of Colombo.
