Professor Sally Shaw is a Professor in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Otago. She holds a BA (Hons) from the University of York, an MSc (Distinction) from the University of Sheffield, and a PhD from De Montfort University. Her research specializations include the critical examination of gender and sexuality issues in sport organisations, nonprofit governance in sport organisations, organisational partnerships in sport, and sport organisation governance. Shaw leads in the development of qualitative research methods and methodology in sport management. She co-coordinates SPEX 209 Sport Development and Management with Associate Professor Mike Sam and teaches SPEX 314 Advanced Sport Management, SPEX 460 Advanced Topics in Sport Development (Sport Management module), SPEX 316 Practicum, and SPEX 516 Practicum.
Professor Shaw has published extensively in top sport management journals and collaborates with local, regional, and national sport organisations to influence policy development and implementation. Her recent research examines diversity, equity, and inclusion, including experiences of LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She serves on the editorial boards of Sport Management Review (ranked #1 in sport management) and Journal of Sport Management (ranked #3). Shaw is a Research Fellow of the North American Society for Sport Management and holds multiple Research Fellow positions in the USA and South Africa. She presents at conferences of the Sport Management Association of Australia and New Zealand and the North American Society for Sport Management. In March 2024, she delivered her Inaugural Professorial Lecture, 'Gender and sexuality in sport management: A queer tale', at the University of Otago. Shaw supervises postgraduate students on topics including heteronormativity in sport organisations, diversity and inclusion, and gender studies in sport.
