Sally Ashton serves as a Lecturer in the School of Humanities, College of Creative Arts, Design and Humanities at Adelaide University. With a career in academia spanning over a decade, she has taught courses in creative writing, professional communication, and screenwriting at the University of South Australia (UniSA) since 2012. Following the formation of Adelaide University, she continues her teaching in these areas, contributing to the creative arts curriculum. Prior to her academic appointments, Ashton worked in broadcasting, education, and as a freelance writer, bringing practical industry experience to her classroom.
Currently, Ashton is pursuing a PhD that utilizes creative nonfiction to delve into the stories examining the participation and experiences of women in the South Australian Country Fire Service. Her research interests center on creative nonfiction and narratives related to women's roles in emergency services. Ashton's teaching portfolio is extensive and includes key courses such as COMM 1045 Creative Writing Workshop (2025, 2024), COMM 1061 Creative Writing and Literature: An Introduction (2025, 2024), COMM 1079 Introduction to Screenwriting (2025, 2024), LANG 2042 Reworking the Canon (2025), LANG 3042 The Writer's World (2025), and LANG 2015 Children's Literature: Picture Books (2024). These offerings highlight her strengths in creative writing practice and editorial skills, fostering a supportive, student-centered learning environment through mentoring and encouragement. Drawing from her involvement in creative industries, she emphasizes practical application in her pedagogy. Although she has not yet received major awards for her writing, Ashton has been short-listed on a couple of occasions, reflecting recognition of her creative endeavors. Through her dedication to teaching and ongoing doctoral research, Sally Ashton enriches the academic community at Adelaide University in the fields of creative writing and nonfiction narrative.
