Dr. S. S. Sundaram serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Indian History at the University of Madras, Chepauk Campus, Chennai. He earned his B.A. in History, M.A. in History, M.Phil., and Ph.D. from the University of Madras. In addition to his academic role, he holds key administrative positions including Chairperson of the School of Historical Studies, Campus Director of the Chepauk Campus, Chairman of the Board of Studies in History for undergraduate and postgraduate programs, and member of the University Syndicate and Senate. Previously, he served as Senior Lecturer in the same department. Dr. Sundaram is also the General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu History Congress and contributes to its proceedings as editor.
Dr. Sundaram's research focuses on modern Indian history, with emphasis on socio-cultural transformations, economic history, and social issues in South India. He edited the volume Socio-cultural Transformation in 20th Century South India, published by the Department of Indian History, University of Madras. Notable publications include Women Luminaries of Travancore in the Leading Roles of Freedom Struggle Movement, Role of the Missionaries in the Education of South India, Female Infanticide in Tamilnadu: A Case Study of Salem District, Groundnut Cultivation in Tamilnadu under British Rule (1800-1900 A.D.), Marketing Strategies to promote Eco-Tourism in Tamil Nadu, and the role of Chinnaswami Subramania Bharathi in the freedom struggle. He completed a UGC Major Research Project titled Community Participation in Sustainable Coastal Tourism: A Case Study of Tamil Nadu Coastal Regions, funded at Rs. 8,39,100. His academic profile encompasses 75 publications, participation in 55 seminars and conferences, supervision of 8 Ph.D. theses, and 3 research projects. Dr. Sundaram has organized international and national seminars, delivered invited lectures, and served as chief guest at various academic events, contributing significantly to historical scholarship in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
