Earlier, he was OUSA Information Officer in 1983 and 1984, and later held roles as Advertising Manager and Critic in 1988. He returned to OUSA as General Manager, where he managed the association's recreation facilities. Blanch is a Life Member of OUSA in recognition of his contributions. Prior to his current position, he worked for some time at the Otago Museum and had a brief involvement in commercial radio.
