Rosangela Tenorio is a Professor of Architecture at the University of Western Australia's School of Design, with over 30 years of experience in academia and architectural practice. Born in northeast Brazil, she graduated with a BArch (Hons) in Architecture and Urbanism from the Federal University of Pernambuco in 1994. She completed her PhD in Environmental Design from the University of Queensland in 2002, researching building energy simulation and thermal comfort in housing in tropical regions such as Darwin, Australia, and Salvador, Brazil. Her early career included internships and work at firms like Peter Eisenman Architects in New York, Piero Lissoni in Milan, and practices in Brazil and Japan. She has held academic positions including Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland, Federal University of Bahia, and Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, before joining UWA. Additionally, she holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from the University of Waikato.
Professor Tenorio co-founded the Bio-Based Materials Design Lab in 2019, focusing on bio-materials like bamboo and mycelium for sustainable construction and product design. Her research interests encompass passive cooling design in warm-humid climates, thermal performance of bio-materials, self-sufficient designs for schools using sustainable resources, and traditional architecture in Timor-Leste and other Portuguese-speaking countries. She serves as Deputy Head of International and Engagement at the School of Design since 2018 and supervises PhD students on topics like mycelium-based products and bio-construction systems. Among her awards are the Japan Foundation Indo-Pacific Partnership Program Research Fellowship (2025-2027), Bronze A’Design Awards for Buka Panels, Uma Chair, and YBY Playkit (2022-2023), D&AD Side Hustle Finalist (2023), and a Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Auckland. Key publications include the report "An integrated proposal for a rural school curriculum and physical infrastructure reform on Ataúro Island, Timor-Leste" (2024), co-edited book "Beyond the Market: Building Sino-Latin American Relations", and forthcoming works on thermal performance of housing and hybrid storage systems for solar homes. She contributes as associate editor for Architectural Science Review and serves on international committees such as ANZASCA and INTA-SEGA.
