Roger Azevedo is a Pegasus Professor in the School of Modeling Simulation and Training at the University of Central Florida, where he also serves as Lead Scientist for the Learning Sciences Faculty Cluster Initiative, with affiliated faculty appointments in the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Internal Medicine. He earned a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from McGill University in 1998, an M.A. in Educational Technology from Concordia University in 1993, and a B.A. in Psychology from Concordia University in 1989. After completing postdoctoral training in Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University from 1998 to 1999, Azevedo held progressive faculty positions including Assistant and Associate Professor at the University of Maryland from 1999 to 2006, Associate and Full Professor at the University of Memphis from 2006 to 2010, Endowed Senior Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) and Professor at McGill University from 2011 to 2013, and Professor at North Carolina State University from 2013 to 2018 before joining UCF in 2018.
Azevedo's research investigates cognitive, metacognitive, affective, motivational, and social self-regulatory processes during learning with advanced technologies including intelligent tutoring systems, hypermedia, multimedia, simulations, serious games, and immersive virtual learning environments. He uses multimodal multichannel data to model human-machine interactions, develop human digital twins, and design adaptive systems that foster self-regulated learning in laboratory, classroom, and in-situ settings such as medical simulators. Notable contributions include directing the SMART Lab and leading projects on AI-driven pedagogical agents and metacognitive support in virtual reality.
