About Robert

Robert Suter, DO, MHA, is the Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Integration at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Master of Health Administration from Des Moines University in 1989 and completed his emergency medicine residency at Brooke Army Medical Center. With over three decades of experience, Dr. Suter has distinguished himself in clinical practice, academic leadership, and military service. As a retired Brigadier General in the U.S. Army Reserve, he commanded the 94th Combat Support Hospital, the 2nd Medical Brigade, and the 3rd Medical Command Forward, with deployments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, Freedom Sentinel, Resolute Support, and Inherent Resolve. He received the Major General Lewis Aspey Mologne Award for Military Academic Excellence and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Dr. Suter's academic career includes professorships in emergency medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He served as Vice President of Quality and Health Information Technology at the American Heart Association, leading efforts to improve cardiovascular and stroke care in over 2,500 U.S. hospitals and internationally. A leader in the field, he was the first osteopathic physician to serve as an officer in the American College of Emergency Physicians, where he was President (2004-05), and also President of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine (2006) and the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians. His scholarly contributions include key publications such as "The Emergency Medicine Physician Workforce: Projections for 2030" (Annals of Emergency Medicine, 2021), "Army Urban Augmentation Medical Task Forces for COVID-19: Part 1—Development" (Military Medicine, 2021), "Emergency medicine in the United States: a systemic review" (World Journal of Emergency Medicine, 2012), and contributions to stroke outcomes research and EMS agenda development. Dr. Suter has delivered hundreds of presentations worldwide on evidence-based emergency medicine, quality improvement, and health policy.
