Robert Ouvrier is Emeritus Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Sydney's Westmead Clinical School. He obtained his BSc (Medical) with Honours in 1961, MBBS in 1964, and MD in 1986 from the University of Sydney, and was elected Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1973. Supported by the Nestlé Pediatric Travelling Scholarship and University of Sydney Postgraduate Medical Scholarship from 1968 to 1971, his career highlights include Honorary Physician and Fellow in Neurology at the Royal Children's Hospital, Melbourne (1967-1968); Staff Specialist in Neurology at the Children's Hospital at Westmead, Sydney (1972-2015); Head of the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Sydney (1978-1979); Founder and Head of the Institute for Neuroscience and Neuromuscular Research at Westmead Children's Hospital (1999-2008); and Inaugural Petre Foundation Professor of Paediatric Neurology at the University of Sydney (2001-2013).
Professor Ouvrier specializes in the natural history and pathophysiology of peripheral neuropathic conditions, cerebrospinal fluid amino acids, neurotransmitters and drug metabolism in epilepsy, and developing screening protocols for impairments of higher mental function in children. Internationally renowned as a leader in paediatric neurology, he has pioneered neuromuscular research and served as an author and educator. His extensive leadership encompasses President of the International Child Neurology Association, Vice-President (1975-1979), Council Member (1986-1990 and 2006-2014), Chairman of the Executive Committee for the 2nd International Child Neurology Congress in Sydney (1979), and Editor of the ICNA Newsletter (1994-2006). Major honours include Companion of the Order of Australia (AC, 2016) for eminent service to medicine particularly paediatric neurology, Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM, 2004), Frank Ford Award for Lifetime Achievement (ICNA, 2012), 75th Anniversary Award (Royal Australasian College of Physicians, 2014), Chevalier de l'Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur (France, 2001), and Chevalier de l'Ordre national du Mérite (France, 1996).
