About Robert

Robert H. Mundheim is Professor of Corporate Law and Finance in the James E. Rogers College of Law at The University of Arizona, where he has taught since 2011. He hosts the annual Conversations with Bob Mundheim speaker series, featuring discussions with national leaders in business and law on topics such as corporate governance, markets, ethics, and career development. Mundheim earned his B.A. magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1954 and LL.B. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1957. He also received an honorary M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1971, an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from The New School in 2019, and an honorary Doctor of Laws from The University of Arizona in 2023.

Throughout his over 65-year career, Mundheim has held prominent roles across government, private practice, corporations, and academia. He served as an attorney at Shearman & Sterling from 1958 to 1961 and again since 1999 as Of Counsel. As Special Counsel to the Securities and Exchange Commission from 1962 to 1963 and General Counsel of the U.S. Treasury Department from 1977 to 1980, he played a key role in negotiating the release of U.S. hostages held in Iran. At the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he was Professor of Law from 1965 to 1970, Fred Carr Professor of Law and Financial Institutions from 1970 to 1980, Dean from 1982 to 1989, and University Professor of Law and Finance from 1980 to 1992. Additional leadership positions include Co-Chairman of Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson from 1990 to 1992 and Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Salomon Inc. and Salomon Smith Barney Holdings Inc. from 1992 to 1998.

Mundheim's contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including the American Bar Association’s Michael Franck Professional Responsibility Award in 2020, the Lifetime Achiever Award from The American Lawyer Magazine in 2014, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Law Institute in 2015, the Alexander Hamilton Award from the U.S. Treasury Department in 1980, and the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2007. He chaired the ABA Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility from 2008 to 2011, served on the Council of the American Law Institute from 1985 to 2012, and advised several American Law Institute projects on securities law, corporate governance, and lawyers. In 2022, the Robert H. Mundheim Professorship of Law and Business was established at Arizona Law in his honor.
