Professor Robert Ariens is Professor of Vascular Biology in the School of Medicine at the University of Leeds. He obtained a BSc in Biology from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1990. He completed postgraduate training with Professor Mannucci at the University of Milan, Italy, and with Professor Hemker at the University of Maastricht, the Netherlands, before earning his PhD in 1997 from the University of Maastricht for studies on the tissue factor pathway. Ariens advanced his career at the University of Leeds, serving as Head of the Discovery and Translational Science Department from 2018 to 2021. He has held prominent leadership roles, including President of the British Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis from 2016 to 2018 and President of the International Fibrinogen Research Society from 2014 to 2018. Additionally, he was elected to the Council Class 2026 of the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and acted as Vice-President of the ISTH 2022 London Congress held at ExCel London.
Ariens specializes in haemostasis, thrombosis, blood coagulation, vascular biology, fibrinogen, factor XIII, and clot structure. His laboratory's research has developed innovative methods for assessing clot structure and function, uncovering characteristics that drive thrombosis, the protective fibrin film on clots against bacterial infection, and fibrin crosslinking mechanisms that inhibit thromboembolism, demonstrated through new murine models. Utilizing advanced imaging, molecular, and biophysical analyses, his studies are supported by grants from the British Heart Foundation, Wellcome Trust, and UKRI. Key publications include 'Fibrin(ogen) and thrombotic disease' (Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 2013), 'A fibrin biofilm covers blood clots and protects them from bacterial invasion' (Science Translational Medicine, 2018), and 'Thrombus Structural Composition in Cardiovascular Disease' (Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, 2021). He has published extensively in leading journals such as The Lancet, PNAS, Journal of Clinical Investigation, Blood, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, Circulation, and Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis. Ariens delivers lectures on blood diseases, haemostasis, bleeding, and thrombosis in the medical curriculum, as well as fibrin clot structure to intercalating BSc students and biophysical studies to PhD candidates. He supervises BSc, MSc, MD, and PhD students in haemostasis and thrombosis and has mentored numerous early-career researchers, significantly influencing the field.
