Specializing in veterinary anaesthesia and analgesia, Dr. Costa investigates premedication protocols, pharmacokinetic effects, and perioperative management challenges, including in dogs undergoing castration, brachycephalic breeds, and endocrine patients. Prominent publications feature "Gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine combination prior to castration in dogs" (Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2023), "Pharmacokinetic profile and physiological effects of oral and intramuscular administration of gabapentin, melatonin, and acepromazine in dogs" (Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, 2024), "Postoperative regurgitation and respiratory complications in brachycephalic dogs undergoing routine anesthesia with multimodal analgesia" (JAVMA, 2020), and the chapter "Physiology, Pathophysiology, and Anesthetic Management of Patients with Endocrine Disease" (2025). Additional works address insulating cat extremities during anaesthesia (JAVMA, 2025) and rough anaesthetic recoveries. She earned the Dean's Teacher Merit Honor Roll at Murdoch University and serves on the ACVAA Exam Committee (2020-2024) and Education Committee, while peer reviewing for the Australian Veterinary Journal.
