Rate My Professor Ray Mitic

Dr. Radomir Ray Mitic serves as Assistant Professor of Higher Education in the School of Education at the College of William and Mary, where he joined in 2024. A first-generation college student and child of immigrants originally from Chicago, he previously held a faculty position at the University of North Dakota for three years. Mitic holds a Ph.D. in Higher & Postsecondary Education from New York University, a Graduate Certificate in Educational Research Methodology from the University of Illinois at Chicago, an M.S. in Education & Social Policy from Northwestern University, and a B.A. in History, International Studies, and Spanish from Loyola University Chicago.

His research program centers on the equitable outcomes of higher education at local, national, and international levels, encompassing equity in graduate education, student outcomes, civic engagement, first-generation college students, international/comparative higher education, and quantitative research methods, including post-college civic engagement and graduate aspirations, enrollment, and attainment. Current projects include the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations/American Council of Learned Societies Fellowship titled 'Examining the Impact of Public Liberal Arts Education on Cultivating Civic and Democratic Citizenship: Causes and Results,' conducted in collaboration with Dr. Leping Mou of the University of Glasgow, and the Inclusive Graduate Education Network project 'Ad Astra Diversitas: Advancing Full Participation in Space Science.' Mitic teaches in the master's and doctoral programs, with recent courses including History of Higher Education, Educational Planning, Higher Education Law, and Financing Higher Education. Key publications comprise 'The role of family cultural capital to predict study abroad participation in first-generation U.S. undergraduates' (Journal of First-Generation Student Success, 2024), 'Developing civic consciousness in Russian higher education: An institutional case study' (Higher Education, 2023), 'Global learning for local serving: Establishing the links between study abroad and post-college volunteering' (Research in Higher Education, 2020), and 'Diverse pathways to graduate education attainment' (Journal of Diversity in Higher Education, 2020). He has earned the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations/ACLS Fellowship (2024), University of North Dakota Foundation/McDermott Faculty Award for Outstanding Graduate or Professional Teaching (2024), University of North Dakota Vice President for Research and Economic Development Early Career Scholars Program grant (2023), Inclusive Graduate Education Network Research Accelerator Grant (2021), and Higher School of Economics Semyonov Award for Early Career Scholars (2019). Mitic serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of First-Generation Student Success, editorial board member for the Journal of College Student Development, and is active in the Association for the Study of Higher Education, American Educational Research Association, and Comparative & International Education Society.
