Rate My Professor Rashid Sunyaev

Rashid Sunyaev is a theoretical astrophysicist who served as Distinguished Visiting Professor in the School of Natural Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Study from 2010 to 2024. He has made major contributions in the fields of physical cosmology and high-energy astrophysics. His research interests include the cosmological recombination of hydrogen and helium, the physics of gas accretion onto neutron stars and black holes, and the problem of matter and radiation interaction under extreme astrophysical conditions.

Sunyaev earned an MS degree from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1966 and a PhD from Moscow State University. He held positions including professor at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology from 1974, head of the Laboratory of Theoretical Astrophysics at the Space Research Institute from 1974 to 1982, and head of the High Energy Astrophysics Department at the Space Research Institute from 1982 to 2002. He has been chief scientist at the Space Research Institute since 1992 and director of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching, Germany, since 1996. Sunyaev received numerous honors, including the Crafoord Prize in 2008, the Gruber Prize in Cosmology in 2003, the Kyoto Prize in 2011, the Max Planck Medal in 2023, and the Fritz Zwicky Prize for Astrophysics and Cosmology in 2026. His key contributions include the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, developed with Yakov Zeldovich, and the Shakura-Sunyaev model of accretion disks around black holes, developed with Nikolay Shakura.
