Distinguished Professor Rahat Munir serves as Head of the Department of Accounting and Corporate Governance and Professor of Accounting at Macquarie Business School, Macquarie University, Sydney. He earned his PhD in Accounting and Corporate Governance and Master of Commerce in Accounting from Macquarie University. His professional qualifications include FCPA from CPA Australia, CA from Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and CMA. Prior to entering academia, he held several senior roles in the banking sector. Over 25 years, he has occupied senior academic and industry leadership positions, including Undergraduate and Postgraduate Program Director at Macquarie University. He has been a member of the Macquarie University community since 2006 and is recognized for excellence in curriculum development, innovative teaching practices, accreditation processes such as AACSB and AMBA, change management, team building, and human resource and financial management. Professor Munir provides media commentary on business, tertiary education, employability, skills for life, the future of the accounting profession, forensic governance, corporate social responsibility, and performance management practices.
Professor Munir's research interests encompass forensic accounting, financial crime investigation, financial statement integrity, management accounting and controls, education, corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, corporate culture, and UN Sustainable Development Goals. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles in leading global journals, along with books, book chapters, monographs, conference papers, and commissioned reports, with research spanning industries like Big Four accounting firms, banking, manufacturing, airlines, and politics across countries including China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Malaysia, Nepal, Bangladesh, India, and Germany. Notable publications include 'Horngren's Accounting' (10th ed., co-authored, 2026), 'Digital economy dynamics: strategy and processes in digital banking' (co-authored with D. Vander and S. Brammer, 2026), 'Driving sustainable environmental performance in SMEs: the interplay of ethical leadership, circular economy, and environmental management control' (co-authored, 2025), 'The mediating role of Organizational identification and Employee organizational commitment on the association between Employee empowerment and management innovation' (co-authored with S. Alshumrani and K. Baird, 2024), and 'Performance measurement systems in banks' (co-authored with K. Baird, 2019). His accolades include the Vice-Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning (2015), Vice-Chancellor's Award for Programs that Enhance Learning (2013), Dean’s Teaching Excellence (2012), Business/Higher Education Roundtable National Award (2014), CPA Australia’s Excellence in Achievement in Academia (2015), and Wharton-QS Stars Reimagine Education Awards in the Nurturing Employability category (2015, 2021, 2024). Professor Munir has fostered academic and industry partnerships across Asia, Europe, and beyond, contributing to faculty and course reviews in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and the USA, and leading initiatives like CFO Forums, Women Thought Leadership events, and Business Leaders Roundtables.
