Ragavanantham Shanmugam served as Department Chair and Associate Professor in the Department of Engineering Technology at Fairmont State University from August 2023 to May 2025. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University, India, in 2017, and his M.Tech. in Computer Aided Design from Madras University in 2003. In this role, he oversaw the Engineering Technology programs, including the Engineering Management degree, and contributed to curriculum development as evidenced in university faculty senate documents and program sheets.
His academic interests center on advanced manufacturing, metal additive manufacturing, new material development, composites, and low-cost condition monitoring systems for industrial processes using non-destructive testing techniques. Shanmugam's research output includes peer-reviewed publications such as 'A review on additive manufacturing for aerospace application' published in Materials Research Express in 2024, co-authored with Radhika C, Monsuru Ramoni, and Gnanavel BK; 'Influence of shelf-life duration on mechanical, thermal and shape memory properties of 3D printed PLA' in Results in Materials in 2024; 'A Comprehensive Review of Self-Healing Polymer, Metal, and Ceramic Matrix Composites' in Polymers in 2022; and 'Impact of Print Orientation on Morphological and Mechanical Properties of 3D Printed ABS' in Silicon in 2021. He also co-authored 'Structured Pathways for Student Success: A Strategic Approach to Improving Retention Rates in Engineering Technology Programs' presented at the 2025 ASEE North Central Section Annual Conference. Additionally, he served as editor for the book Manufacturing in the Digital Age published by Routledge in 2026. Prior appointments include positions at Navajo Technical University and Jacksonville State University, where he advanced engineering programs.
