Dr Raffi Gugasyan serves as Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Department of Immunology at Alfred Hospital, Monash University, and has held the position of Senior Lecturer in the Department of Immunology at Monash University since 2009. Additionally, he is Head of the Diagnostic Markers in Chronic Immune Disorders laboratory and Chair of Education at the Burnet Institute, with a past appointment as Honorary Research Associate at the Hudson Institute of Medical Research. Gugasyan completed his BSc (Hons) at Monash University and PhD at the University of Melbourne, where he conducted his doctoral work at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research. He furthered his training with postdoctoral studies at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
His research centers on the signalling circuitry in lymphocytes, with a particular emphasis on NF-κB pathways that safeguard against chronic diseases like autoimmunity and cancer. The work in his laboratory is directed towards developing innovative diagnostic markers for autoimmune conditions and cancer, exploring biomarkers of inflammageing that drive inflammation and ageing, and assessing dietary influences on age-associated B cell development in chronic immune disease models. Prominent publications include "Loss of NF-κB1 Causes Gastric Cancer with Aberrant Inflammation and Expression of Immune Checkpoint Regulators in a STAT-1-Dependent Manner" (Immunity, 2018), "Vaginal lactic acid elicits an anti-inflammatory response from human cervicovaginal epithelial cells and inhibits production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with HIV acquisition" (Mucosal Immunology, 2017), "NFκB1 is essential to prevent the development of multiorgan autoimmunity by limiting IL-6 production in follicular B cells" (Journal of Experimental Medicine, 2016), and "Targeting p38 or MK2 Enhances the Anti-Leukemic Activity of Smac-Mimetics" (Cancer Cell, 2016). Gugasyan has produced over 27 research outputs and is recognized internationally and nationally for his contributions to immunology. He is a Chief Investigator on the "Establishing a Jeffrey Modell Center in Melbourne, Australia" project.
