Rachel Wicking is the Secondary Professional Practice Coordinator in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. She holds a Diploma of Education (DipEd) and a Master of Education (MEd), both from Monash University. In this capacity, she manages all aspects of professional practice for pre-service teachers in the Master of Teaching (Secondary) program, including support for placements and notifications related to course withdrawals. Her office is located in Room 2.27 of the Education Building on the Crawley campus, with contact available via telephone at +61 8 6488 1461.
As unit coordinator, Wicking oversees Observation Professional Practice (EDUC2209), an undergraduate unit focused on professional practice observation, offered in Semester 1 at UWA (Perth). She was previously designated as Assistant Professor and served as Project Officer for the Australian University Teaching Criteria and Standards Project in 2014-2015, under the leadership of Professor Denise Chalmers at UWA. This initiative developed comprehensive frameworks, standards, and tools for evaluating teaching quality in Australian higher education, aligned with academic appointment and promotional levels A through E, incorporating indicative standards, peer review rubrics, and consultation outcomes from across the sector.
Wicking has contributed as co-supervisor to master's theses within the Graduate School of Education, including Amanda Rose Brien's 2018 Master of Educational Leadership thesis examining the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and their implementation in Western Australian schools, and Katherine Carson's research on youth climate change activists in Western Australia, alongside Lesley Vidovich. In May 2024, she participated in the Graduate School of Education's hosting of teachers from Hong Kong for professional development in assessment practices, collaborating with team members Jan Dook, Jennifer Shand, Wei Zhang, Rajinder Kaur, and Sarah Malu. Her work supports the preparation of educators equipped for diverse teaching environments.
