Professor R. Selvakumar serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology at PSG Institute of Advanced Studies, Coimbatore, a position he has held since October 2022. He joined the institution as Lecturer in the same department in June 2009, advanced to Assistant Professor in September 2010, became Associate Professor in October 2015, and served as Associate Professor and Head from October 2015 to September 2022. Selvakumar holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology specializing in Microbial Biotechnology from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, in 2009; an M.Sc. in Applied Microbiology from PSG College of Arts and Science, Bharathiar University, in 2003; and a B.Sc. in Microbiology specializing in Immunology from The American College, Madurai Kamaraj University, in 2001, where he received an academic award as class topper.
His research specializations encompass groundwater and wastewater treatment, development of integrated microbial and nanomaterial-based solutions for water purification and environmental remediation, extraction of rare earth metals from ores using cell interactions in 3D scaffolds, and biomolecule applications. With over 95 international and national research papers and 9 book chapters to his credit, he has an H-index of 35, i10-index of 72, and more than 3,100 citations, demonstrating substantial influence in nanobiotechnology and environmental science. Notable publications include "Recent advances in micropollutant removal and mitigation" in Current Opinion in Environmental Science & Health (2023), "Insitu synthesis of gold nanospheres immobilised electroconductive bioinks" in Materials Letters (2024), and "Profound convention and enhanced biocompatibility analysis of ZnO/Ag heterojunction nanorods based advanced root canal sealers" in Bioengineering (2025). Selvakumar has earned major awards such as the Water Advanced Research and Innovation (WARI) Fellowship from the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum (2016-2017), PK Das Best Faculty Award in Nanotechnology (2015), Endeavour Research Fellowship from the Australian Government (2015), Blaustein Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, Israel (2013), and Visiting Scientist position at the University of Newcastle, Australia (2024).
