About Qi

Qi Zhang is Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, specifically in the Communication, Control and Automation section, at Aarhus University within the Faculty of Technical Sciences. She co-leads the NeXt research group on Network Computing, Communications and Storage. Her research focuses on designing efficient and sustainable data communication and computing technologies, with key areas including Edge Intelligence, Internet of Things, data compression and analytics, Goal-oriented Semantic Communications, and Tactile Internet. These efforts address challenges in modern communication systems, time-series IoT data compression, edge-cloud computing continuum, immersive telerobotics, and semantic-aware data processing for real-time inference.

Qi Zhang received her M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in telecommunications from the Technical University of Denmark in 2013 and 2017, respectively. From 2017 to 2019, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Connectivity Department at Nokia Bell Labs in Espoo, Finland. She then joined Aarhus University as an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and was appointed full Professor in early 2025. As principal investigator, she heads multiple funded projects, including the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network TOAST: Touch-enabled Tactile Internet Training Network and Open Source Testbed (2023–2027), NUEI: Nordic University Cooperation on Edge Intelligence (2024–2028), PANDORA: A Comprehensive Framework enabling the Delivery of Trustworthy Datasets for Efficient AIoT Operation (2024–2027), and ADVISOR: Distributed coordination of autonomous swarms for anomaly detection (2025–2028). Additionally, she leads Edge Intelligence for Immersive Telerobotics in Touch-enabled Tactile Internet (2022–2026). Her publications include 'Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based Video-Haptic Radio Resource Slicing in Tactile Internet' (2025, with G. Kokkinis and A. Iosifidis), 'Highly Efficient Direct Analytics on Semantic-Aware Time Series Data Compression' (2025, with G. Sun and P. Karras), 'Dynamic Semantic Compression for CNN Inference in Multi-Access Edge Computing: A Graph Reinforcement Learning-Based Autoencoder' (2025, with N. Li and A. Iosifidis), 'DeepCoT: Deep Continual Transformers for Real-Time Inference on Data Streams' (2025, with G. Carreto Picón, P.Y. Zhou, and A. Iosifidis), and 'Knowledge Rumination for Client Utility Evaluation in Heterogeneous Federated Learning' (2025, with X. Jiang et al.). With over 3,200 citations on Google Scholar, her work influences advancements in edge computing and semantic communications. She serves as a reviewer for ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks and delivered her inaugural lecture at Aarhus University in 2025.
