Rate My Professor Puleng Segalo

Professor Puleng Segalo is a full professor of psychology in the College of Human Sciences at the University of South Africa, where she serves as the incumbent of the Chief Albert Luthuli Research Chair. She earned her PhD in 2013 from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in Psychology, with a focus on Critical Social and Personality Psychology; the degree was awarded with double distinctions. Segalo is a Fulbright scholar and holds a C2 rating from the National Research Foundation of South Africa as an established researcher.

Her research centers on African psychology, decolonisation, gender, social justice, trauma, and feminist theory, often employing innovative visual methodologies such as embroidery to explore women’s experiences and hidden narratives. She has received multiple honors, including the 2014 Women in Science Award in the Distinguished Young Women category for Humanities and Social Sciences, the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Research, and the TWAS Regional Award in 2021 for the popularisation of science. Segalo contributes to capacity building through supervision of postgraduate students and research associates while advancing interdisciplinary and community-engaged scholarship.
