Rate My Professor Pierre Deligne

Pierre Deligne is Professor Emeritus in the School of Mathematics at the Institute for Advanced Study. Born on October 3, 1944, in Etterbeek, Belgium, he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics in 1966 and a doctorate in 1968 from the Université Libre de Bruxelles. He later received a doctorat d’État ès sciences mathématiques from Université Paris-Sud in 1972. Deligne joined the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques as a visiting member in 1968 and became a permanent member in 1970, remaining there until 1984.

In 1984, Deligne was appointed to the faculty of the Institute for Advanced Study, where he has pursued research in algebraic geometry and number theory. His contributions include the proof of the Weil conjectures in 1973. He received the Fields Medal in 1978, the Crafoord Prize in 1988, the Balzan Prize in 2004, the Wolf Prize in 2008, and the Abel Prize in 2013. Deligne became Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study in 2008.
