Philip Warren Anderson was the Joseph Henry Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Princeton University. Born on December 13, 1923, in Indianapolis, Indiana, he earned his B.S., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University, completing his doctorate in 1949 under the supervision of John H. Van Vleck. Anderson joined Bell Telephone Laboratories in 1949, where he conducted research until 1984. He served as a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Cambridge from 1967 to 1975. In 1975, he began a half-time faculty appointment in the Department of Physics at Princeton University, transitioning to full-time in 1984. He was named the Joseph Henry Professor of Physics and became emeritus in 1996.
Anderson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1977, shared with John H. Van Vleck and Sir Nevill Francis Mott, for his theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems. He was awarded the National Medal of Science in 1982. His research focused on condensed matter physics, including foundational work on Anderson localization, spin glasses, and theories of high-temperature superconductors. Key publications include Concepts in Solids (1963) and Basic Notions of Condensed Matter Physics (1984). Anderson contributed to the development of the Anderson-Higgs mechanism and influenced the understanding of collective phenomena in materials. He maintained an active presence in the Princeton physics department following his emeritus appointment until shortly before his death on March 29, 2020, in Princeton, New Jersey.
