Rate My Professor Phil Blyth

Associate Professor Phil Blyth serves as Senior Lecturer in eLearning within the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Otago, where he also holds an Associate Professor position in the Department of Anatomy and acts as Academic Lead for Curriculum Integration in the MBChB Programme, Office of the Head of Faculty. He earned his BHB and MBChB degrees, graduating in 1995, and a PhD in Bioengineering in 2008, with a thesis titled 'A Virtual Reality Simulator for Hip Surgery.' Clinically, Blyth trained as an Orthopaedic Registrar from 1998 to 2009, including part-time service, served as Trauma Fellow at Auckland Hospital in 2000, and currently practices in Emergency Medicine at Dunedin Hospital. His prior academic appointment was as Lecturer and Anatomist in the Department of Anatomy with Radiology at the University of Auckland from 2001 to 2009.

Blyth's research focuses on clinical anatomy, medical education, trauma, and surgical simulation through mobile apps and virtual reality. He developed the BoneDoc augmented reality simulator for orthopaedic procedures such as hip fracture fixation and supracondylar humeral fracture pinning. Notable publications include 'Tablet-Based Fluoroscopy Simulator for Supracondylar Humeral Fracture Pinning' (2022), 'Forced Disruption of Anatomy Education in Australia and New Zealand: An Acute Response to the Covid-19 Pandemic' (2020), 'Virtual reality assessment of technical skill using the Bonedoc DHS simulator' (2008), and 'A simulation-based training system for hip fracture fixation for use within the hospital environment' (2007), contributing to 1,578 citations. He chairs the eLearning and ICT Subcommittee of the Medical Program, serves as President of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists, Secretary of the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists, and member of the New Zealand Major Trauma Network. Blyth teaches clinical anatomy, trauma, and eLearning via clinical decision-making activities using Moodle.
