Cowley's research encompasses translation studies, intercultural communication, and analyses of French literary works. Notable publications include the co-translation of Michel Serres' The Five Senses: A Philosophy of Mingled Bodies (Bloomsbury, 2009), with an introductory chapter 'Sense and sensibility: translating the bodily experience' co-authored with Margaret Sankey.
