Paul Sugden serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Business Law and Taxation at Monash University's Faculty of Business and Economics. He earned a Bachelor of Arts majoring in economics and history, a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland, and a Master of Laws from the University of London, focusing on intellectual property law and comparative anti-trust law. Before joining Monash, Sugden worked as a solicitor for 14 years, practicing commercial law with a specialization in intellectual property and corporate restructuring at international and specialist firms. His professional experience includes teaching law at the University of Queensland, serving as honorary solicitor to the Australian Textile Fibre Forum Ltd on intellectual property issues for 16 years, advising the Victorian Automotive Chamber of Commerce on IP in the motor industry, chairing the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand's Queensland branch for six years, and securing a Victorian Government tender for developing an entrepreneurship workshop module on intellectual property laws.
Sugden's academic interests center on the relevance and effects of intellectual property law on business organizations and information technology, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goal 16. Notable publications include "Is the “flipped” pedagogical model the answer to the challenges of rural nursing education? A discussion paper?" co-authored with H. Anolak and A. Coleman in Nurse Education Today (2018); the two-part series "Myriad Genetics Inc: patenting of isolated human DNA - a missed policy opportunity or judicial interpretation supporting a judicial minimalist status quo" with A. Perera in European Intellectual Property Review (2017); "The power of one! The failure of criminal copyright laws (piracy) to blend into the greater cultural consciousness!" in European Intellectual Property Review (2014); and contributions to "Fashion, Design and Events" such as "Wedding hats, intellectual property and everything!" (2014). He has been recognized with the Dean's Commendation for Teaching Excellence from the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2007 and 2010, and the Vice-Chancellor's Award for teaching excellence in team teaching - Gold Project in 2003. Sugden coordinates and teaches numerous units including Intellectual Property Laws, Information Technology Law, and Commercial Law.
