Dr. Patrick Tang is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering at Monash University Malaysia, Faculty of Engineering. He earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nottingham. His research specializations encompass cavitation technology and nano/microencapsulation for controlled delivery of bioactive ingredients, colloid and polymer science with emphasis on encapsulation and controlled release technologies using functional colloid micro or nanoemulsions, and the design of smart, biodegradable, and biocompatible nanoparticle-stabilized emulsions for nutraceutical and pharmaceutical applications. He also develops self-healing rubber and polymeric microcapsules with tunable properties for applications in consumer products, biomedical fields, agriculture, and aerospace. Patrick leads the Colloids and Polymers Group and has established collaborative industry-driven projects with Malaysian multinational companies including CCM Innovative Solutions Sdn. Bhd. and Sime Darby Plantation Sdn. Bhd., focusing on functional polymeric coatings and sustainable palm oil processing technology.
Patrick's career includes a visiting fellowship at Chulalongkorn University's Center of Excellence in Particle Technology in 2019 and his current role as Senior Research Advisor there since December 2021. He has received major awards such as the Research Led Fund Award from the University of Nottingham in July 2011, Best Poster Presenter at the Postgraduate Research Poster Competition, Faculty of Engineering, University of Nottingham in May 2012, Young Chemical Engineer at the IChemE Malaysia Awards 2014, 32nd International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) 2021, Dean's COVID Teaching and Innovation Award 2022 from Monash University, IChemE EdSIG Innovative and Interactive Educational Game/Tool/App for Digital Classroom 2021, and Gold Medal in the Environment and Natural Resources category at the National Nuclear Innovation Award competition 2024. His scholarly contributions include 52 articles, 16 review articles, 4 book chapters, and patents as inventor with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia in 2024 and 2025. Key publications are 'Advancing sustainable high degree carboxylation of nanocellulose using dual polyacid ternary deep eutectic solvent' (2025, Bioresource Technology), 'Emerging Trends in Enzymatic Reactors for Fructooligosaccharides Synthesis' (2025, Food Reviews International), 'Enhanced efficiency of superhydrophobic coatings: A comparative analysis between dip and spray techniques using octadecyltrichlorosilane' (2025, Journal of the Taiwan Institute of Chemical Engineers), and 'Nanocellulose aerogels for antibiotic removal: Sustainable adsorbents with enhanced performance and regeneration potential' (2025, International Journal of Biological Macromolecules). He supervises four full-time PhD students, acts as associate supervisor for two others, and teaches CHE3172 Nanotechnology and Materials 1 and CHE3163 Sustainable Processing I. Patrick has delivered invited talks at conferences such as PRIM International Rubber Conference in 2025 and Materials Research Thailand in 2025.
