Professor Naji Tabet (MSc Immunology, MSc Psychology, PGCert Medical Education, MD University of London, FRCPsych) serves as Professor of Dementia and Old Age Psychiatry at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS). After obtaining his medical degree, he joined the University College London Training Rotational Programme in Psychiatry, undertaking an academic Registrar post centered on dementia research and medical student teaching. He completed higher specialist training in Old Age Psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in London, where he honed his clinical, research, and teaching interests in dementia disorders. In 2007, Tabet established the Dementia Research Unit at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, leading it through several phase II-IV clinical trials aimed at advancing treatments for Alzheimer’s disease in partnership with multinational pharmaceutical companies and national academic collaborators. He holds a deanery certificate in postgraduate education and contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at BSMS, including co-founding the regional MRCPsych course for psychiatry trainees.
As Director of the Centre for Dementia Studies (CDS) at BSMS and Course Leader for the MSc Dementia Studies, Professor Tabet oversees research into non-pharmacological and lifestyle interventions in dementia disorders, quality of life for older people with dementia, dementia diagnosis, and complex therapeutic intervention and management protocols. His investigations pursue two strategies: assessing disease-modifying treatments via clinical trials and exploring non-drug approaches, including antioxidants, exercise, diet, social networks, and comorbidities such as hypertension in Alzheimer’s disease progression. Clinically, he is an Honorary Consultant at Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, delivering a diagnostic and treatment Memory Assessment Service. Tabet leads the Dementia Theme at the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration Kent, Surrey and Sussex (ARC KSS), with CDS research aligned to its sub-themes, and serves as Dementia Speciality Co-Lead for the NIHR Clinical Research Network Kent, Surrey and Sussex. His scholarly output encompasses numerous publications, including systematic reviews on vitamin E supplementation, antidepressants for depression in Alzheimer’s disease, and exercise interventions for cognitive outcomes in dementia.
