Dr. Nadiah Ahmad is a Lecturer (Education Focused) in the Malaysia School of Pathways & Immersion at Monash University, where she serves as Deputy Head of School (Immersive Education). She coordinates, executes, and consults on field-based academic units such as AMU3011 Sustainability, the environment and society and MON2500 Research, experimentation and discovery. Nadiah holds a PhD in Arts (International Studies) from Monash University Malaysia, awarded on 6 October 2021, with the thesis titled "Assessing the Efficacy of Gender Mainstreaming Strategies: A Case Study on Indonesia’s Rural Participatory Development Programs." She earned a Master of Arts from Universiteit Leiden in 2014 and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from Monash University Malaysia. Prior to her current appointment, she tutored Communications and Global Studies units at Monash University Malaysia's School of Arts and Social Sciences. Her earlier career includes roles as a media practitioner at PETRONAS and a publicist at a local brand agency.
Nadiah Ahmad's academic interests center on social inequalities and justice, policy processes and impact, Southeast Asian contemporary political histories and governance, and critical development studies in the Southeast Asian context. Her PhD research evaluated gender mainstreaming strategies embedded in Indonesian rural participatory development programs. She aligns with the Global Challenges Research Fund South-South Migration, Inequality and Development Hub, researching gendered experiences of Nepali migrant workers along the Nepal-Malaysia corridor. Nadiah contributed research assistance to a 2019-2022 grant from the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil on certification and conditions for oil palm plantation workers in Malaysia. Key publications include "Transnational practices of care along the Nepal-Malaysia remittance corridor" (2024, co-authored with Yvonne Khor), "An intersectional perspective on migration and gendered inequalities" (2023), "Gender inequality, mainstreaming strategies and perpetual liminalities" (2020), and "Current Issue: Scrutinising Colonial Epistemologies in Postcolonial Universities" (2024). She is a Fellow in Inclusive Education (2024 recipient) and co-recipient of a Learning & Teaching Grant worth RM30,000 in 2026. Nadiah engages in public outreach through hosting firefly identification workshops for citizen science, producing events like Fahmi Reza: Design for Activism, and contributing to media on topics such as gender dynamics and migrant issues in Malaysia. Her work supports UN Sustainable Development Goals including SDG 5 Gender Equality, SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. She accepts PhD supervision in critical development studies examining intersectional impacts of sustainable development goals.
