Dr. Murat Üngör is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the University of Otago's Otago Business School. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Southern California (2010), an MA in Economics from the same university (2007), an MA in Economics from Bilkent University, Turkey (2004), and a BS in Management Engineering from Istanbul Technical University (2002). Üngör joined the University of Otago in January 2016 as a Lecturer and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in February 2019. Previously, from September 2010 to November 2015, he worked as an Economist in the Research and Monetary Policy Department at the Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey.
Üngör's research interests center on international macroeconomics, trade, economic growth, and development, particularly structural transformation processes. His work examines China's structural transformation and its global impacts, productivity-driven growth and trade patterns, de-industrialization in mature economies, and the slow pace of structural change in Africa. Notable publications include "Productivity Growth and Labor Reallocation: Latin America versus East Asia" (Review of Economic Dynamics, 2017), "Agricultural Productivity and Growth in Turkey" (Macroeconomic Dynamics, 2014, with Ayşe İmrohoroğlu and Selahattin İmrohoroğlu), "The Lion on the Move Towards the World Frontier: Catching Up or Remaining Stuck?" (Journal of African Economies, 2018, with Tarek M. Harchaoui), "Revisiting Human Capital and Aggregate Income Differences" (Economic Modelling, 2020, with Susanna G. Campbell), and "What Has New Zealand Gained from the FTA with China?: Two Counterfactual Analyses" (Scottish Journal of Political Economy, 2020, with Sam Verevis). His research has been referenced in World Bank reports, including 'Global Productivity: Trends, Drivers, and Policies' and the 2020 'Global Economic Prospects January Report'. Üngör has received the 2025 University of Otago Award for Excellence in Teaching (Business School), the 2024 Sustained Excellence in Teaching Award and 2022 Best Teaching Staff Award from the Otago Business School, and a 2017 nomination for the OUSA Teaching Excellence Award. He has also obtained multiple University of Otago research grants as principal or associate investigator.
