Rate My Professor Theodore Hickman-Maynard

Theodore Hickman-Maynard is Associate Dean for Ministry Studies and Lecturer on Ministry at Harvard Divinity School. He joined the school in August 2021 and oversees the master of divinity program. Hickman-Maynard holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University with a concentration in Afro-American Studies. He received both a Master of Divinity and a Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University School of Theology. With more than twenty years of ministry experience, he has held positions including senior pastor, youth pastor, minister to men, and minister of worship. He currently serves as associate minister at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lynn, Massachusetts, where his spouse is the pastor.

Before joining Harvard Divinity School, Hickman-Maynard was associate dean for student and community life and Assistant Professor of Black Church Studies at Boston University School of Theology. In that role he taught courses on social justice, church renewal, and practices of ministry in the Black Church tradition. He has served as co-investigator on the research projects Creative Callings, which examines innovative ministries helping individuals and communities pursue lives of meaning and purpose, and Trauma-Responsive Congregations, which applies trauma theology and trauma-response chaplaincy training to congregational ministry in urban settings.
