Mike Steelman, B.Arch., AIA, NCARB, serves as Director of the Architecture Program and Assistant Professor of Art, Architecture and Design at Harding University. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Arkansas in 1979. Following his degree, Steelman practiced architecture for five years in Dallas and Little Rock. In 1985, he founded SCM Architects and served as principal architect. For over 30 years, he acted as the architect for numerous projects at Harding University, including the Botham Jean Legacy of Love Memorial. Prior to joining the full-time faculty in January 2022, Steelman was a member of the Interior Architecture advisory board for 15 years and an adjunct instructor in the Interior Architecture program for seven years.
Appointed by President David Burks in August 2021 as the inaugural director of Harding University's accelerated Master of Architecture program, Steelman emphasizes preparing students for professional practice. Under his leadership, the program achieved Initial Candidacy status from the National Architectural Accrediting Board in 2024. The 2023 NAAB Visiting Team Report commended Steelman for his leadership during the accreditation process. As a professionally licensed architect, he integrates practical experience into teaching, contributing to campus initiatives such as student design studios and facility developments like the Kendall Building for architecture students. Steelman's career bridges professional practice and academia, supporting Harding University's mission through architectural education and design.
