Mike Meylan is a Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle, Australia. He holds a PhD, Bachelor of Science (Honours), and Bachelor of Arts from the University of Otago, New Zealand. Prior to his current role, he served as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Auckland from 2003 to 2011 and as Lecturer at Massey University’s Institute of Information Science & Technology from 1999 to 2003. An accomplished applied mathematician, Meylan’s research focuses on hydroelasticity, wave scattering, differential equations, geophysical and environmental fluid flows, partial differential equations, numerical solutions of differential equations, operator algebras, functional analysis, and ocean engineering. His work addresses practical problems such as wave propagation in the marginal ice zone, floodwater effects on rail tracks, neutron strain tomography, slug flow in pneumatic conveyors, and heat diffusivity in coal, supported by Australian Research Council grants. He collaborates internationally with the University of Cambridge, where he was a Clare Hall Visiting Fellow in 2018 and is a life member, and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
Meylan has published extensively in top-tier journals including Nature, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, Proceedings of the Royal Society, Geophysical Research Letters, and Journal of Geophysical Research. Select publications include Flexural Gravity Waves: The Mathematical Theory and Applications (2026), Wave power extraction by a submerged piezoelectric plate (2021), Coupling Fluid Flow and Porous Media Flow (2020), Modelling wave-ice shelf interactions (2017), and Wave attenuation due to ice cover: An experimental model in a wave-ice flume (2017). He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the ANZIAM Journal, on the editorial board of the Journal of Marine Science and Engineering, and as Associate Editor for Wave and Tidal Energy in Frontiers in Energy Research. Meylan has organized conferences such as the KOZWaves conference and the Mathematics of Sea Ice and Ice Sheets conference, and co-directed the Mathematical in Industry Study Group from 2020 to 2022. He received a 2012 Teaching Award and focuses on student-centered teaching with real-world examples and research into diversity and inclusion in mathematics education.
