Miguel Lebre de Freitas is an Assistant Professor with Agregação in Economics at Nova School of Business and Economics, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, within the Economics for Policy Knowledge Center. He also holds a position as Assistant Professor at Universidade de Aveiro. Lebre de Freitas earned his PhD in Economics from the University of London in 1998, a Master's degree in Economics from Nova School of Business and Economics in 1992, and a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the same institution in 1986. Additionally, he obtained a Habilitation (Agregação) from the University of Minho. Between 2005 and 2010, he served as Chief Economist at the Portuguese Ministry of Economy, where he was Director of the Cabinet of Strategy and Studies. Throughout his career, he has engaged in numerous applied research projects as a consultant for prominent organizations, including the European Commission, the World Bank, the United Nations, the ACP Secretariat, the European Court of Auditors, the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), and the Bank of Portugal. He teaches economics courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels and has extensive experience in executive education programs in Portugal, Brazil, and Angola.
Lebre de Freitas's research focuses on international macroeconomics, economic growth, and the Portuguese economy. His publications appear in leading journals such as the Journal of International Money and Finance, the Canadian Journal of Economics, and the Journal of Common Market Studies. Notable works include 'Forecasting inflation with excess liquidity and excess depreciation: The case of Angola' (Economic Change and Restructuring, 2023), 'International currency substitution and the demand for money in the euro area' (Economic Modelling, 2022), 'Euro Area membership and the probability of a sudden stop: an empirical assessment' (Journal of Common Market Studies, 2018), 'Productive experience and specialization opportunities for Portugal: An empirical assessment' (Portuguese Economic Journal, 2015), 'Currency substitution, portfolio diversification, and money demand' (Canadian Journal of Economics, 2006), 'Currency substitution and money demand in Euroland' (Atlantic Economic Journal, 2006), 'Portugal-EU convergence revisited: Evidence for the period 1960-2003' (International Advances in Economic Research, 2006), and 'The dynamics of inflation and currency substitution in a small open economy' (Journal of International Money and Finance, 2004). He has also contributed book chapters, such as 'The Krugman-Macedo diagram revisited' (Economic Globalization and Governance, 2020), 'Portugal: the economy' (Western Europe 2021, 2020), and 'Portugal’s adjustment programme: The run-up to the sovereign debt crisis, programme design, implementation and legacy' (The Political Economy of Adjustment Throughout and Beyond the Eurozone Crisis, 2019).
