Rate My Professor Michael Reade

Professor Michael Reade is Director of the Greater Brisbane Clinical School in the University of Queensland Medical School and Professor of Military Medicine and Surgery. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from the University of Sydney, a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Oxford on the molecular pathogenesis of nitric oxide production in human septic shock, a Master of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh, and a Doctoral Diploma from the University of Sydney. A specialist intensive care physician and anaesthetist, Reade completed clinical training in Sydney, Melbourne, Oxford, and Pittsburgh, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship in clinical trials and epidemiology at the University of Pittsburgh. He returned to Australia in 2007 as Associate Professor of Intensive Care Medicine at the Austin Hospital and University of Melbourne, having held faculty appointments at the University of Oxford where he taught physiology and at the University of Pittsburgh as an Instructor in critical care. He maintains adjunct or honorary appointments at the University of London, US Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, University of Melbourne, and Monash University. Commissioned in the Australian Army in 1990, he served in the Army Reserve until 2011 and deployed to Bosnia, Kosovo, Timor, Solomon Islands, Afghanistan, and Iraq, commanding medical units including the first ADF hospital accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Trauma Verification Program.

Reade's research centers on military and civilian trauma medicine, focusing on treatments for exsanguinating haemorrhage, coagulopathy, trauma systems improvement, and acute cognitive impairment such as delirium from traumatic brain injury. He leads NHMRC-funded multicentre clinical trials on cryopreserved platelets, tranexamic acid, fibrinogen concentrate, erythropoietin in trauma, and anti-delirium strategies, with collaborations including Australian Red Cross Lifeblood and ANZICS Clinical Trials Group. Holding research grants exceeding A$51 million, he has published over 230 peer-reviewed papers and 14 book chapters, including highly cited articles like 'Sedation and delirium in the intensive care unit' (New England Journal of Medicine, 2014) and 'The impact of advance care planning on end of life care in elderly patients' (BMJ, 2010). He has delivered over 440 lectures, supervised 10 postgraduate students including four PhDs, and served as President of the Australasian Trauma Society from 2019 to 2021. Reade was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in the Military Division in 2019 for distinguished service.
