Dr Melinda Waterman is a lecturer in the School of Sciences at the University of Wollongong and is affiliated with the ARC Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future program. She completed her PhD in Biotechnology at the University of Wollongong in 2015, with her thesis examining the biology and chemistry of Antarctic moss species and their natural protective mechanisms against ultraviolet radiation. As a plant biotechnologist, her research specializations center on the physiology of plants living in extreme environments, including natural products, radiocarbon dating, photosynthesis, and the impacts of climate change on these organisms. Waterman has developed moss species as proxies for understanding coastal Antarctic climates and has extensive experience in biochemistry and conservation biology teaching, where she coordinates, delivers, and assesses both theory and practical components at the tertiary level. Her career includes roles as an early career researcher collaborating on projects related to Antarctic ecosystems and long-term environmental monitoring. Key contributions include co-authorship on studies such as research bias in long-term monitoring of Antarctic nearshore marine and terrestrial biota, published in Global Change Biology. Waterman maintains an active presence in academic service and leadership through her affiliations and has contributed to public engagement initiatives focused on Antarctic science. Her work supports broader understanding of how environmental changes affect plant health and ecosystem dynamics in polar regions.
