About Maura

Maura Borrego is Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the Walker Department and Professor of STEM Education in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education at the University of Texas at Austin. She holds the E.P. Schoch Professorship in Engineering and directs the Center for Engineering Education. She serves as deputy editor for the Journal of Engineering Education (American Society for Engineering Education, 2015–present) and Senior Associate Editor for the Journal of Women and Minorities in Science and Engineering. Previously, she served as program director at the National Science Foundation, board member and vice president for Professional Interest Councils (2014–2015), chair of Professional Interest Council IV (2013–2016), and chair of the Educational Research and Methods Division (2011–2013) of the American Society for Engineering Education. She also acted as associate dean and director of interdisciplinary graduate programs and was Provost’s Teaching Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin (2016) and AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow (2010). All of her degrees are in Materials Science and Engineering: B.S. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, M.S. and Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Borrego's research focuses on engineering and STEM higher education, including faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates. Her interests encompass factors that support successful transfer of Hispanic engineering students from two-year to four-year institutions, engineering undergraduate student resistance to active learning, how engineering instructors make decisions about their teaching, learning in graduate engineering research groups, and interdisciplinary education and teamwork. Key publications include "Quantitative, qualitative, and mixed research methods in engineering education" (2009, Journal of Engineering Education), "Systematic literature reviews in engineering education and other developing interdisciplinary fields" (2014, Journal of Engineering Education), and "Diffusion of engineering education innovations: A survey of awareness and adoption rates in U.S. engineering departments" (2010, Journal of Engineering Education). She has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2008), National Science Foundation CAREER Award (2006), two outstanding publication awards from the American Educational Research Association, best paper awards from ASEE divisions, and recognition as a Fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education (2020).
