About Mary

Dr. Mary Gene Saudelli serves as Dean and Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of New Brunswick's Fredericton campus, having been appointed to a five-year term effective July 1, 2024. Prior to this role, she held positions as Associate Dean, Professor, and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Education, Community, and Human Development at the University of the Fraser Valley, and as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Leadership, Higher, and Adult Education at the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. With over 30 years of teaching experience, the last 20 in higher education, Dr. Saudelli has instructed in diverse international contexts including Canada, Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Istanbul. Her teaching portfolio encompasses pre-service teacher education, curriculum and program design, socio-cultural theories in teaching and learning, sociology of education, adult learning, community education, international and Indigenous education, new literacies, English Language Teaching, and English as an Additional Language. She has supervised graduate theses and projects, led curriculum renewal initiatives, overseen practicum experiences, developed international practicum programs, and facilitated faculty support for experiential and interdisciplinary educational opportunities.

Dr. Saudelli holds a PhD in Philosophy of Education, an MEd in Curriculum and Teaching English as a Second Language, and a Bachelor's degree in Adult Education—all earned with distinction from Brock University—as well as a BA in Sociology and Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University. Her research specializations include high impact practices, trans-disciplinary 21st century curriculum design and implementation, equity, diversity, inclusion, decolonization, and belonging, women’s leadership, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, Indigenous education, and international higher education. Notable publications feature her book The Balancing Act: International, Transdisciplinary Higher Education in the 21st Century (Sense Publishers, 2015), the edited volume 21st Century Literacy Teacher Education, and peer-reviewed articles such as "Unveiling Third Space: A Case Study of International Educators in Dubai, United Arab Emirates" (Canadian Journal of Education, 2012) and "Broadening the Landscapes of Learning: Language, Culture, Meaning-Making in a Nursing Degree Program" (Journal of Educational Thought, 2015). She has served as lead guest editor for special issues in the Journal of Educational Thought and Brock University Journal of Education, obtained research grants from funding bodies in Canada, Qatar, and Dubai, and presented keynote addresses and speaking engagements internationally. Dr. Saudelli has completed professional certifications including the Diplomacy Master Class by Madeleine Albright and Condoleezza Rice, and the Xwelítem Siyáya: Allyship and Reconciliation Building Program at the University of the Fraser Valley in 2023.
