Markus Potter serves as Associate Professor and Artistic Director in the Department of Theatre and Dance at the University of Kansas, where he teaches courses in Acting, Directing, Script Analysis, and Musical Theatre. He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Columbia University, where he worked closely with Anne Bogart and Kristin Linklater. Potter joined the University of Kansas in 2018 and has since contributed to its theatre programs, including directing Chasing Gods by Paris Crayton III at Kansas Repertory Theatre. His career encompasses extensive experience as a director, actor, producer, and educator across major institutions.
Potter's directing credits include the off-Broadway production of Stalking the Bogeyman at New World Stages, earning an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination and New York Times Critic's Pick; Church & State at New World Stages, nominated by the Off-Broadway Alliance for best new play; Why You Beasting?, a Time Out NY Critic's Pick; Lost Boy Found in Whole Foods by Tammy Ryan at Portland Stage Company, nominated for Off-West End Awards for Best Production and Best Direction; Red Speedo at Center Rep, nominated for a Shellie Award for best direction; Imagine: Yemen by Naomi Wallace at Pershing Square Signature Center; and The White Rose: We Defied Hitler at Coterie Theatre. As an actor, he performed seasons with The Guthrie Theatre, Denver Center, Long Wharf Theatre, American Conservatory Theatre, and Berkeley Rep, including the national tour of Death of a Salesman with Christopher Lloyd. He served as producer for the Broadway transfer of The Velocity of Autumn, which brought Estelle Parsons a Tony Award nomination. Potter is the Founding Artistic Director of NewYorkRep Theatre and former Interim Artistic Director of Theatre Aspen. His publications include excerpts from Stalking the Bogeyman, co-written with David Holthouse, in Best Men's Stage Monologues 2015 and Best Women's Stage Monologues 2015 by Smith and Kraus. He is affiliated with the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society nominating committee, Actors Equity Association, National Alliance for Musical Theatre selection committee, and National New Play Network showcase selection committee. Potter received the University of Kansas Scholarly Achievement Award in 2025 and serves as a Mellon DEI Teaching Scholar.
