About Mark

Prof. dr. M.S. (Mark) Golden is Professor in the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam, affiliated with the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute and the Institute of Physics, where he leads the Quantum Materials Group. His research centers on the experimental investigation of the electronic structure and properties of quantum matter and emergent quantum materials. Key areas include unconventional superconductors such as high-temperature superconducting cuprates and their strange metal state, topological materials including magnetic topological insulators, Dirac and Weyl semimetals, transition metal oxides and their heterointerfaces, and 2D materials down to the single monolayer limit. He employs advanced techniques such as angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), soft and hard X-ray photoemission, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic circular dichroism, and coherent soft X-ray lensless imaging, often conducted at synchrotron light sources.

Golden has co-authored over 150 publications in leading international journals, contributing significantly to the understanding of strongly correlated and topological electron systems. Notable recent works include 'The asymmetric Fermi surface of Bi2201' (SciPost Physics, 2025), 'Momentum-dependent scaling exponents of nodal self-energies measured in strange metal cuprates and modelled using semi-holography' (Nature Communications, 2024), 'Puddle formation and persistent gaps across the non-mean-field breakdown of superconductivity in overdoped (Pb,Bi)2Sr2CuO6+δ' (Nature Materials, 2023), and 'Superconducting dome and pseudogap endpoint in Bi2201' (Physical Review Materials, 2022). Earlier influential papers cover topics such as electronic states in single-wall carbon nanotubes (1998) and the speed limit of the insulator-metal transition in magnetite (2013). He led the Dutch national research program on Topological Insulators until 2019 and serves on the scientific advisory boards of IFW Dresden and Synchrotron SOLEIL. Golden participates in major consortia including QuMat, DIEP, and the Strange Metals program, fostering interdisciplinary advances in quantum matter.
